Behavior and Management Policy
Classroom management is essential in creating a successful classroom community. I believe in a structured classroom; however, I also believe in positive reinforcement as a tool for classroom management. Several management tools will be used throughout the school year to ensure your child is successful. Some of these tools include:
In the beginning of the school year we will create a list of classroom expectations. All students will sign this document upon completion. By doing this, students not only become an active part of their classroom community, they can also set appropriate goals for behavior and productivity based on the expectations we have set as a class. We will follow these expectations throughout the school year. These expectations will be posted on our class website once they are created within our classroom.
Should students not follow our classroom rules and expectations, further action will be taken. Such action includes: being removed from an activity, filling out a Think Sheet (to be signed by a parent or guardian if the student continues inappropriate behavior), or in extreme cases, being sent to the office.
My goal as an educator is to make students feel welcome, safe, and included in our classroom community. With these tools in place, I hope to create a positive learning environment for all students.
- Color chart: This system allows me to track student behavior throughout the day using a tri-color system (green, red, and yellow). How it works: each student starts his or her day in the color green. Throughout the school day, students will be monitored for staying on task, persistence, helping others and more. If students are not exhibiting these various behaviors, their name will be moved to yellow, and if they continue negative behavior, their name will be moved to red and further consequences will follow. Students have the opportunity to improve their color throughout the day depending on the behavior they are displaying. Students are asked to track their color/behavior on a behavior calendar at the end of each day; which is taken home and signed by a family member and brought back to school the next day. At the end of week, if a child remains in the green, they will earn a star on their star card (see details below).
- Star Card – When students are modeling positive behavior, trying their hardest, and/or doing their best students will receive a “star punch” on a punch card. Once a student receives 10 stars, they will turn their card into me and receive a small incentive.
- Marbles - For the class as a whole, if students exhibit positive behavior they will be awarded one marble in a jar. When the jar is filled, we will decide as a class, on an appropriate award.
